“100% renewable” is the biggest lie in AI right now.
Every AI company says it runs on clean energy. It's a lie, and the water bill is the part they're hiding.
Every AI company wants you to believe their data centers run on sunshine and wind. It's a lie. Not a stretch, not spin, a lie. That “powered by 100% renewable energy” badge on your favorite AI tool is a marketing trick, and I can say that because marketing is my job. Here's what's actually happening, and why the ugliest part of it isn't even about carbon.
Does AI actually run on clean energy?
No. Most of it runs on fossil fuels, and the companies know it.
The International Energy Agency, the people whose entire job is counting the world's energy, found that fossil fuels still supply the majority of the electricity feeding data centers. Renewables cover a chunk. Nuclear covers a chunk. But the machine that's answering your questions is mostly burning gas and coal to do it (IEA, Energy and AI).
So how do these companies get to say “100% renewable”? Paperwork. They buy renewable energy credits and sign contracts for clean power somewhere on the grid, then subtract it on a spreadsheet. In 2025, data centers accounted for about 40% of every corporate renewable energy deal signed on Earth (IEA). That's a real thing. It just doesn't mean the electrons cooling the servers came from a wind farm. It means they bought enough clean power on paper to cancel out the dirty power they actually used. The certificate says solar. The wall socket says gas.
So what's really powering the AI boom?
Increasingly, brand-new gas plants. Built on purpose. Right next to the data center.
Here's the part that should end the “green AI” conversation. The demand is growing so fast that the power grid can't hook these places up quick enough. So instead of waiting, developers are building their own natural gas plants on site, mostly in the United States, just to keep the servers running.
Sit with that. A company can announce a shiny renewable deal in a press release and, at the same exact time, fire up a private gas plant behind the building because the clean grid can't keep up. Both things are true. Only one makes the slide deck.
And the demand isn't slowing. The IEA says electricity use from data centers jumped 17% in 2025 and is on track to double by 2030, with the AI-focused ones tripling. You don't triple your appetite and run it on good intentions.
Wait, what does this have to do with water?
Everything, and this is the part nobody's talking about. Even if every data center on the planet ran on 100% real renewable power tomorrow, it would still be draining an obscene amount of fresh water. Clean energy doesn't fix that. Not one drop.
Here's why. These buildings run hot, and a lot of them cool the servers by evaporating water. Clean, drinkable water. The kind your town needs. Solar panels on the roof don't change the fact that the building is sweating out millions of gallons to keep from cooking itself.
So while everyone argues about carbon and kilowatts, the fight that's actually landing on real communities is about their water. And “we run on renewables” is a dodge that doesn't touch it.
How much water are we talking about?
More than you'd guess, and the numbers are getting hard to ignore.
Researchers at UC Riverside put it in plain terms in a study called Making AI Less Thirsty. A short back-and-forth with a chatbot, somewhere around 10 to 50 answers, can burn through roughly a 500ml bottle of water once you count the cooling and the power behind it. One bottle for a quick chat. Now multiply that by hundreds of millions of people doing it all day.
Training the models is worse. One cluster of Microsoft data centers in Iowa that helped build GPT-4 reportedly went through more than 13 million gallons of water in a single month (Tom's Hardware). Zoom out to the whole industry and the estimates for 2025 run into the hundreds of billions of gallons of water, a lot of it pulled from places already fighting drought.
We're evaporating drinking water to autocomplete emails. And the company doing it is telling you it's green.
Why doesn't “green energy” fix the water problem?
Because they're two different problems, and the industry keeps hoping you won't notice.
Carbon is about what you burn. Water is about what you cool with. A wind turbine can clean up the first and do absolutely nothing for the second. That's the sleight of hand. Companies point at the energy mix, wave the renewable badge, and count on you assuming “green” covers everything. It doesn't. It covers the part that's easy to market and skips the part that's draining an aquifer in someone's hometown.
As a marketer, I actually respect the move. It's clean, it's simple, and it works. As a human being who'd like my kid to have water, I think it's garbage.
To be fair, here's their best defense
I'll give them their strongest argument, because a real one deserves it.
AI is getting more efficient fast. The IEA itself says the energy used per AI task is dropping at a rate we've almost never seen in energy history. OpenAI's Sam Altman has claimed a single query uses about a fifteenth of a teaspoon of water. And those renewable deals aren't fake; they do push more clean power onto the grid over time.
All true. And none of it saves the argument. Per-task use is falling, but total use is exploding, because we keep using way more of it. Cheaper and cleaner per query just means everyone runs a thousand more queries. That's not me being cynical, that's the IEA's own projection: demand doubling by 2030 even as each task gets leaner. The efficiency is real. It's just losing the race to the growth.
So what should you actually ask?
Stop accepting the badge. Start asking the two questions that matter.
When a company tells you their AI is green, ask them: where do the actual electrons come from, right now, at this building? Not the certificate. The socket. And ask them: how much fresh water does this thing drink, and where does it come from? If they can't answer both without hiding behind a renewable logo, you have your answer.
I'm not anti-AI. I work in it. I think it's one of the most important tools we've ever built. That's exactly why the lazy greenwashing makes me mad. A technology this powerful deserves honesty about what it costs, not a feel-good sticker slapped over a gas plant and a drained reservoir.
“100% renewable” isn't a fact. It's a slogan. And it's time we stopped clapping for it.
